I was born in Mexico and grew up in Texas when it was part of the United States, but my story goes back to the beginning of European exploration and colonization. As such, I am part of the new race created by the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlan and the mixing of Spaniards and Indigenous peoples of the New World.

I have always believed that I came into this world as part of two distinct peoples, each with a long history forged by deep and fervent religious, political, and cultural beliefs that gave rise to a new culture: one that has survived the dramatic divisions that have characterized the development of the peoples of the New World.

But my story began long before my birth, and when I die, my story will intertwine with a part of the World Historical Spirit that, according to Hegel, the German philosopher, gives meaning to each of our lives and provides the ultimate design of the world.

This book is about that spirit that drives us to be better human beings, one that goes beyond what we see but touches our hearts; things we were unaware of but that shaped us as people.
